Happy Halloween from Pelicans and Their Allies 2015
Our Ghostbusters themed 2015 Halloween video card
Making the Just Like July Video
36 sketches. 101 water color paintings. 158 paper cutouts. 6 months.
I made every frame of this video. I knew nothing about animation when I started.
I wanted to make each animal as accurate as possible (mostly due to a discussion with Nick Lund, AKA The Birdist), so I used my Sibley Guide for the birds and Google image search for the mammals. First were the drawings, which were traced onto construction paper to be cut out and assembled in After Effects. The backgrounds were all painted with watercolors. It got fairly tedious, so I made sure to keep well hydrated with a variety of spirits.
This one obviously became the roadrunner. There are also a few pieces of the bison and prairie dog in there as well, plus a Prarie Falcon that didn't make the cut.
Pile 'o bird parts
A bunch of the birds before I scanned in all the pieces.
All of the critters that had moving parts were made of loose pieces which were scanned in seperately and assembled in After Effects. But the Turkey Vulture didn't have to move so I glued it all together in hard copy. It's around here somewhere. You can have it if you want it.
Horse and rider
These are the what became the horse(s) and rider, profile view.
Zen and the art of cutting out motorcycles
The body of the motorcycle, obviously. I forget what that oval thing is.
I wasn't able to get the moon as round as I had hoped. But the craters turned out alright.
The comet was made the same as this, only I had to make 8 of them in order to have different frames to stitch together.
Water colors are fun.
Half of the rattle snake.
Rattle snake negative space, and a rat that didn't get used. The rat was pretty adorable.
Paper clip horse
Putting together the paper clip horse for the run cycle. Memories of this make me wanna take a nap.
